Minnesota corn farmers put their support for the RFS in writing

Reading Time: 2 minutes
EPA letters

Minnesota corn farmers signed over 7,000 letters telling EPA “Don’t mess with the RFS!”

This is our final plea reminder: You have about 36 hours left to let the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) know how damaging its proposal to slash the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and cut the amount of ethanol blended in gasoline would be to farmers, rural communities and our wallets.

EPA is accepting public comments until 10:59 p.m. Central time on Tuesday, Jan. 28. If you haven’t submitted comments yet, you can do so by clicking here. It only takes a couple of minutes.

Over 7,000 Minnesota corn farmers and renewable fuels supporters have signed letters to the EPA already. Many of these letters included hand-written, personal notes telling EPA how important ethanol has been to their farming operation and to the economic health of the rural communities where they live, work and raise a family.

We flipped through the thousands of letters and pulled out a few that also had hand-written notes. Here is what some of those notes had to say:

—————————————————————————————————————————–

“In my lifetime, I’ve heard it said time and time again that the U.S. has no energy policy. Well, it seems that the RFS was the first step in the direction of giving the country an energy policy. Let’s not tear it down before it is fully implemented.”

“Renewable fuels is just plain a win. Please don’t kill it!”

“Our corn price went from $8 per bushel to $3.90 per bushel. Many farmers cannot make their payments. Shades of the 80s!!!”

“In these colder climates, ethanol is the fuel of choice year-round for clean engines and reduced air pollutants! Reducing renewable fuels makes no sense at all. Thank you for reconsidering.”

“Please do the right thing. Don’t be led astray by Big Oil’s deep pockets.”

“We must also remember ethanol cleans the air we breathe, petroleum pollutes. Why would we want to send our dollars over to the Middle East, let’s keep as much as we can at home.”

“Price of corn is probably headed way down….and now this!”

“Why would any American in their right mind not want to buy as much American grown renewable fuel as possible? I think the majority would!”

“We need ethanol for a cleaner environment and a more secure country.”

“I thought we were finally making some progress on energy in this country and then I hear about this. Where did this idea even come from? It makes no sense.”

“P.S.: Biofuels are not only good for our environment, they have improved our rural economy. So many people now can make a decent living.”
