In fall 2013, the Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) was part of a broad coalition that brought E15 to Minnesota. E15, or Unleaded 88, is a cleaner-burning fuel that contains 15% ethanol. It’s known as Unleaded 88 because of its higher octane rating.

Today, there are about 420 fueling stations in Minnesota dispensing Unleaded 88. They’re located in all corners of the state, from Caledonia in the southeast to Hallock in the northwest and from Two Harbors in the northeast to Luverne in the southwest.

All told, about one-fifth of Minnesota fuel retailers offer this cleaner-burning fuel. Odds are that if you drive through any Minnesota city, no matter its size, you’ll find a station offering Unleaded 88.

There are many reasons why drivers might want to fill up with Unleaded 88. The fuel appeals to many because of the fact that it lowers reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to regular unleaded. Others are drawn in because of the higher octane rating that gives your engine a boost. And of course, there’s the fact that Unleaded 88 costs less than regular unleaded — typically 5 cents to 40 cents less per gallon, on average.

So how do you know whether your local fuel retailer offers Unleaded 88? The easiest way to find out is by visiting betterfuel.org, the official website of the the Better Fuel Initiative. The site has an interactive map that includes all fueling stations in Minnesota that offer Unleaded 88 and higher ethanol blends, such as E85. (E85 can only be used in flex fuel vehicles.) Drivers can simply input their address and see a list of stations offering these cleaner-burning fuels near them.

Approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for all cars model year 2001 and newer, Unleaded 88 has been sold in the U.S. since July 2012. It’s the most thoroughly tested fuel in history, according to the Renewable Fuels Association, and is explicitly approved for use in modern vehicles by the overwhelming majority of auto manufacturers.

In the coming months, thanks in part to an investment by Minnesota Corn, the number of Minnesota stations offering Unleaded 88 in our state could further increase. Meanwhile, demand for this cleaner-burning fuel continues to surge. In 2021, Minnesota set a record for Unleaded 88 sales. So far in 2022, Unleaded 88 sales have remained strong.
