Internship provides valuable experience, opportunities for growth

This past summer, and continuing into March, I have had the opportunity to intern with the Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) in Shakopee, MN. This internship allowed me to grow and challenge myself in many ways that I wouldn’t have been able to otherwise.

Having a, primarily, dairy background in agriculture, I was drawn to this internship. I wanted the familiar aspects of representing one sector of agriculture but also the challenge of learning about a side of agriculture I knew very little about.

Throughout the summer, I was able to attend many events on behalf of MCGA. I attended many community events, golf outings, Tasseldega Nights, FarmCamp, University of Minnesota Field Tours, and so much more! During these events, I able to promote corn to the general public, and talk with farmers about current issues that they were facing. This allowed me to see both sides of the spectrum of corn farming to better be able to communicate the farmer and the consumer. I was also able to write blog posts, manage social media accounts, and create short informational videos focusing on, can you believe it, corn. One of my favorite events this summer was participating in the Twins Annual Mascot Softball Game! If you question it, just look it up. I guarantee you will get a hoot out of watching it.

Overall, I enjoyed learning about the different aspects of MN Corn and what they do to help benefit farmers and agriculture as a whole. I adore everyone that works in the MCGA office and cannot stress how much they have led to my personal growth and development.

I would highly recommend this internship to anyone who is looking for more experience within communications, marketing, research, promotion, and agriculture. This internship provides many unique and different opportunities that would be hard to find in any one internship program.

Nicole Krumrie is a senior at the University of Minnesota studying Agriculture Communication and Marketing with minors in both leadership and animal science.
