MN gubernatorial candidates visit local corn farms

Representative Erin Murphy with MCGA board member Les Anderson in the first of many visits by gubernatorial candidates

The Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) will be hosting 2018 gubernatorial candidates on family farms throughout Minnesota beginning Friday in an effort to build a greater understanding of modern farm practices and develop relationships with candidates from both political parties.

Through the one-on-one farm experience, growers hope to foster conversation about farmers’ commitment to conservation, and also emphasize the significant economic impact of agriculture in both rural and urban communities in Minnesota.

Farm visits begin tomorrow with State Representative Erin Murphy visiting a corn farm in Cannon Falls. Future visits include Congressman Tim Walz, St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman, former Republican Party Chairman Keith Downey, Naval Reserve Intelligence Officer Phillip Parrish, Minnesota State Auditor Rebecca Otto and State Representative Matt Dean. Below is the full schedule to date, with additional candidates expected to be scheduled:

“Minnesota corn farmers appreciated the opportunity to sit down with gubernatorial candidates of both parties and share information about farming,” MCGA President Kirby Hettver said. “We appreciate the time taken by each candidate to better understand how growers are working to raise high quality crops while caring for our state’s natural resources.”

By offering these firsthand experiences, corn farmers hope the next governor of Minnesota will make future policy decisions based on science and research, while understanding the significant importance of corn farmers to our state’s food sector and the entire Minnesota economy.

Invitations to gubernatorial candidates were extended earlier this summer as part of the “MN Corn Grows MN” campaign, which was launched to build better connections with voters and candidates for elected office to encourage a more informed dialogue about corn farming with all Minnesotans.
