Senior Public Policy Director – Minnesota Corn Growers Association 

POSITION SUMMARY

Working closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, this senior-level individual will lead policy and strategy development for state and federal government affairs activities to advance and operationalize the goals of MCGA.

This individual is responsible for establishing relationships and managing engagement with individuals of state and federal government to promote reforms, support initiatives that represent the needs and interests of Minnesota farmers. Similarly, the Director will collaborate on a regular basis with peer, policy and advocacy organizations, and with farmers and contractors programs to understand their views, garner their insights on issues, and develop consensus on issues and alliances for change. MCGA has a small team and this individual will have responsibilities for leadership on policy and collective action on legislative reform initiatives. In summary, by partnering with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, the Public Policy Director will implement strategy with government entities and stakeholder collaborators to achieve successful outcomes, and operationalize the key goals and strategic objectives of MCGA.

SCOPE OF INFLUENCE

Serve as staff lead to Government Relations Committee in developing and implementing policy for MCGA/MCRPC based on MCGA’s strategic plan. Coordinate with contractors involved with state and federal government affairs activities. (50%)

Communicate and advocate for MCGA policy priorities and activities. Provide direct lobbying as needed. (20%)

Provide regular policy updates to the Committee, staff, Board/Council, and members as necessary in coordination with communications staff. (15%)

Monitor and analyze federal/state legislative and regulatory activity. (15%)

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERINCE

  • Bachelor’s degree required in related field; such as law, public policy, life sciences, and regulated industries. (Master’s highly desired)
  • 5+ years progressive experience analyzing policy proposal, legislation, and/or federal regulation and conveying findings to clients and the public.

Public Relations ManagerMinnesota Corn Growers Association

POSITION SUMMARY

The Public Relations Manager will be a key member of the Communications team; helping MCGA proactively tells its story through media, social channels and partnership engagement. The qualified candidate will strategically enhance the engagement of Minnesota Corn Growers Association and its brand by working effectively to tell the story of Minnesota’s corn farmers to the non-farming public and communicate to corn farmers of the many ways MCGA works on their behalf.

SCOPE OF INFLUENCE

  • Expand new partnerships and opportunities for MN Corn Growers Association
  • Works closely with MCGA staff, mainly Executive, Assistant Executive; Policy, Research and Communication Directors
  • Partner with community groups and environmental groups open to working with organizations like MCGA that represent conventional agriculture
  • Strategically partner with web designers, marketing agencies and other organizations that assist MCGA with media buys and ad creative

JOB REQUIREMENTS 

Bachelor’s Degree required (Master’s in process or achieved desired) and minimum of 6 years with public relations work experience

  • Plan and coordinate all external media opportunities targeting both farm and non-farm audiences
  • Serve as liaison between media, farmer-leaders and MCGA staff. This includes coordinating interviews, preparing background materials and developing key messages
  • Serve as lead writer for all external communications and other content (newsletters, info sheets, ad copy, radio scripts, etc.)
  • Develop daily content for MCGA’s blog
  • Maintain primary MCGA website (mncorn.org)
  • Give MCGA a distinct and impactful voice across multiple social media platforms.
  • Lead staff for weekly “Leader Update” e-newsletter (design, content, and database management)
  • Oversee still photography and video production including selection and coordination of vendors, locations, and subject matter
  • Work with partners to plan and coordinate farm visits, ethanol plant tours and other activities involving visiting foreign trade teams
  • Assist in planning, coordinating and representing MCGA at key events throughout the fiscal year (Farmfest, EXPO, etc.)
  • Work with B&C, Executive, Assistant Executive, Communications, Research and Policy Directors to develop communication strategy around key issues
