Information on corn, soybeans added to small grains update meetings in Northwest Minnesota

Blizzards, road closures, winter storms and wind chill warnings didn’t stop more than 400 farmers in Northwest Minnesota from attending a series of Small Grains Update meetings in mid-January. Minnesota grower associations representing corn, soybean and wheat braved the tricky roads and icy conditions to meet with growers at eight locations over four days to cover many important topics.

The meetings were held in conjunction with local crop improvement meetings and county soybean and corn grower association annual meetings.

University of Minnesota study shows reduced-fat distillers performs on par with full-fat product

The removal of oil from distillers grains, as another way to add revenue to ethanol production, has become near universal in the ethanol industry.

The change has raised questions about the impact on the distillers grains product for beef producers — the main consumers of distillers grains. Researchers with the University of Minnesota Beef Team have stepped up to look at the question and have found solid evidence that reduced-fat distillers grains perform just as well in terms of weight gain and other performance indicators.

FarmKeeping up with the latest reports, studies, regulations, programs and initiatives related to conservation can sometimes make a farmer’s head spin.

Over the last couple of months, several reports have been released and strategies proposed by various agencies and organizations that aim to improve Minnesota’s water quality and enhance on-farm conservation efforts. These reports total almost 1,000 pages, span dozens of websites, involve multiple organizations and encompass several government programs and non-governmental initiatives.

Mazes, Mascots, and More: MCGA Day is a Success at Sever's Corn Maze

A little hail and a few sprinkles weren’t going to dampen the spirits of those at Sever’s Corn Maze & Fall Festival this past Saturday. Smiles and laughter seemed to be the theme of the day as thousands of visitors ignored Mother Nature’s grumblings and, instead, enjoyed the many attractions and activities at Sever’s.

In addition to the normal dose of slide rides, corn maze fun, and exotic animals, visitors on October 5th got in on a special treat.
