Minnesota Department of Ag offers helpline for stressed farmers

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture unveiled the Farm & Rural Helpline this fall as a resource for Minnesota farmers and rural residents under stress. The free, confidential service is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

While MDA long offered a crisis line to farmers, Meg Moynihan, state programs administrator principal with MDA, said the service was retooled and relaunched as the Farm & Rural Helpline to reach farmers before stress becomes a more serious crisis.

Gubernatorial candidates continue corn farm visits

The second half of corn farm visits by 2018 candidates for Minnesota governor is in the books, with four candidates concluding our tour of farms to discuss the importance of agriculture. In the second half of visits, topics ranged from healthcare, to buffers, to property taxes, and more. While candidates varied in their experience on the farm, all came ready to discuss how they can help the state’s 24,000 corn growers.

Registration now open for 2018 Ag EXPO

MN Ag EXPO will take over Mankato Jan. 24-25, 2018, at the Verizon Wireless Center. The biggest and best agricultural show in Minnesota features an excellent list of exhibitors and an engaging lineup of speakers. The event is free to attend for all farmers, and you can pre-register today.

MCGA sweepstakes asks fans to name favorite Minnesota United moment

As part of its season-long partnership with the Minnesota United FC, the Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) partnered with the Twin Cities Major League Soccer team for a sweepstakes that asks fans to choose their favorite moment from the team’s inaugural season. One lucky fan will receive a ticket package for four to next season’s home opener.

On Monday, the Minnesota United social media accounts will post a video of the best moments from the season that will announce the sweepstakes by MCGA.

Program details State Fair experience from 4-H perspective

The Minnesota State Fair may have wrapped up on Labor Day weekend, but fans can relive the “Great Minnesota Get-Together” from the 4-H perspective with “Minnesota 4-H: Growing True Leaders.”

Sponsored by the Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA), “Minnesota 4-H: Growing True Leaders” showcases Minnesota 4-H’ers demonstrating what they have learned through local clubs. MCGA elects DeGraff farmer Kirby Hettver president

The Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) board of directors recently elected Kirby Hettver as its new president for 2017-2018 at its September meeting. Hettver grows corn, soybeans and alfalfa on his farm in DeGraff, Minn.

Hettver is a fifth-generation farmer who has served on the MCGA board of directors since 2014. He has previously served as first vice president and secretary on the board. Hettver’s term began Oct. 1 and lasts one year.

MCGA member receives national honor from Agriculture Future of America

Minnesota Corn Growers Association member Joel Mathiowetz was awarded the Agriculture Future of America “Young Leader in Agriculture” award. The Morgan, Minn., farmer received the award for his longtime contributions to agriculture and youth development.

Mathiowetz, who raises corn, soybean, peas and lambs, is a fifth generation farmer and a member of AFA for more than 20 years. When Mathiowetz first joined AFA it was an opportunity to speak with other farmer leaders during an economic downturn for farmers in 1998.
