UMN Gopher Hockey Farm Family of the Game: The Sievert Family

Written by Jonathan Eisenthal

The Sievert family raises corn, soybeans, barley and alfalfa, along with cattle, hogs and sheep, and a few chickens. The Sieverts vary the application of manure according to where the soil needs it most,

Buffer alternatives: Finding the right conservation ‘fit’ for each farm

Written by Jonathan Eisenthal

Minnesota’s buffer law was created to protect state water resources from erosion and runoff pollution. While Minnesota farmers agree with the intended outcomes of the buffer law, many are concerned that what is proscribed in the legislation will not achieve the intended results.

That’s why the law was also written to give farmers and landowners ‘alternatives’ in cases where the vegetative buffer won’t work or where there might be an even better way to achieve the same water quality benefit.

The Mehrkens family, who farm just outside Thief River Falls, were honored for their conservation work by the University of Minnesota and Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) in late December.

As part of recognizing their commitment to conservation, Goldy Gopher took Kaleb Mehrkens, 9, on a Zamboni ride around the rink at Mariucci Arena during the December 30 men’s hockey game. Kaleb is the family’s resident hockey fanatic – even his figure-skating older sisters,
