Minnesota Corn Growers Association achieves membership milestone

Reading Time: 2 minutes

MNcorn_PMSThe Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) is now 6,935 members strong, surpassing a membership milestone a full six months ahead of schedule.

Back in December of 2011, MCGA farmer-leaders set a goal of reaching 6,900 members by 2015. By June 13 of this year, that goal was achieved.

“MCGA has always been one of the strongest grassroots voices for corn farmers in the country and now we’re even stronger,” said MCGA President Ryan Buck. “Our membership increase reflects the fact that today is an exciting and challenging time to be a corn farmer. The more corn farmers are united as one through organizations like MCGA, the better we can address those challenges.”

Minnesota harvested 1.3 billion bushels of corn in 2013 and is consistently among the top 5 corn producing states in the country. Minnesota is also home to 21 ethanol plants with the capability to produce more than 1.1 billion gallons of ethanol annually.

MCGA membership has grown by more than 16 percent since December of 2011. Of course, MCGA is looking to add more members and become even stronger as it continues to provide farmers a voice on important issues such as the Renewable Fuel Standard, government regulations that impact farming and building connections with the non-farming public.

A small group of corn farmers founded MCGA in 1978 to identify and promote opportunities for corn growers. Over the years, MCGA has provided corn farmers with a voice in Washington D.C. and St. Paul, helped develop the ethanol industry, invested in discovering new uses for corn and supported valuable research to boost yields and improve water quality and environmental habitat.
