Warm fall soil temps delay nitrogen application

Despite delays due to wet weather, harvest is in progress or already finished for most Minnesota row crop acres. Now an important decision for many farmers is whether or not, and when, to apply fall nitrogen fertilizer. Fall nitrogen fertilizer is only recommended in the northern and western part of the state where climate and soils make nitrogen loss less likely.

MCGA: We will become the most sustainable and environmentally responsible corn farmers in the U.S.

The Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) announced today its intentions to implement an ambitious set of initiatives with the goal of making Minnesota corn farmers the most sustainable and environmentally responsible in the United States.

In making the announcement, MCGA President Harold Wolle said: “This is a grassroots, farmer-driven effort that addresses values shared by both farmers and non-farmers. It’s a lofty goal. But we believe the approximately 25,000 corn farmers MCGA represents are already making great strides in achieving it.

Farmers: Report crop losses to crop insurance agent BEFORE harvesting

The Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) is reminding farmers to contact their crop insurance agent before harvesting fields to report and verify crop losses.

Heavy rains throughout Minnesota have left some farmers dealing with issues like flooded fields, mold and stalk rot caused by wet soil. A 24-hour period from Sept. 21-22 saw some areas of the state get drenched with anywhere from 5-10 inches of rain.

A Crystal Ball? U of M researcher looking at climate change and the impact on corn

Corn farmers: Time to make your voices heard on ethanol, atrazine and trade

Bad news: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is once again attempting to slash the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and cut the amount of corn ethanol blended in our fuel supply. The EPA is also using faulty science in a risk assessment for atrazine, which could curb the availability and use of the effective herbicide. Study: Corn exports add $74.7 billion to the U.S. economy

Exporting corn and corn products doesn’t just help improve a farmer’s bottom line, it provides a jolt to the entire U.S. economy. A new study from Informa Economics concluded that the export of U.S. corn and corn products generated $74.7 billion in annual economic output in 2014.

Sales of all U.S. grain feed products contributed $82 billion. The U.S. gross domestic product was boosted by $29.8 billion thanks to the export of corn and corn co-products.

Corn planted so far in Minnesota would cover 757,575 football fields

Minnesota farmers wasted no time in taking advantage of the warm and dry weather to start planting corn — corn that will put food on our plates, fuel in our vehicle’s tanks and used as an input in thousands of consumer products such as tennis shoes and sun screen.

Minnesota Corn Growers announce Conservation Innovation Grant recipients

MNcorn_PMSWith a boost from the Minnesota Corn Growers Association’s (MCGA) new Conservation Innovation Grant program, five farmers will be implementing a new conservation practice to better manage nitrogen fertilizer and protect water quality on their farms this growing season. Another Minnesota farmer is receiving funding to host a field day and showcase existing conservation efforts to other area farmers.

A total of $39,000 was awarded to help farmers test or develop an innovative or best practice in the following areas:

  • Nitrate loss reduction
  • Improved nitrogen management practices for Minnesota soils
  • Maintaining or improving water quality,

Market drives planting intentions: Some stick with the tried and true while others try to reduce costs

Pestorious.2015-0693A quick (unscientific) survey of Minnesota corn growers reveals that the market is very much behind the decision-making process, but for some that means staying the course, while others seek means to lower their costs.

Myron ‘Mickey’ Peterson, who farms with four brothers in Sacred Heart, Minn., says they plan to stick with what has been working for them for a number of years: the same corn and soybean varieties, planted in a 50/50 rotation on about the same amount of land — roughly 3,000 acres among the five partners.
