Commodity Classic draws largest crowd ever down to the Big Easy

Written by Jonathan Eisenthal

Better farm prices are right around the corner and farmers, the eternal optimists, want to be ready.

So this year, at Commodity Classic — the annual gathering of the National Corn Growers Association, American Soybean Association, National Association of Wheat Growers and National Sorghum Producers — for the first time ever included the Association of Equipment Manufacturers, who brought an expanded trade show exhibition.

“You could spend a whole day and not get through it — it was maybe one-third bigger than previous trade shows,

USDA: Ethanol produces twice the amount of energy it consumes

The crowd that’s always trying to tear down ethanol constantly pushes the myth that ethanol requires more energy to make than it creates. The myth has been disproven time and again, but that’s never stopped the anti-ethanol zealots before.

Well, maybe a new USDA study finally slow them down.

The report is called “2015 Energy Balance For The Corn-Ethanol Industry” and concludes that ethanol has, on average a 2:1 energy ratio.

MN ethanol industry will ride through time of ‘tight margins’

With continuing low cost gasoline erasing much of ethanol’s price advantage, this is a time of belt tightening for the ethanol industry, according to industry representatives in Minnesota. They speculate that these conditions may last anywhere from the next 12 months to two years. Even with corn reaching very low prices, profit margins for ethanol are tight.

On Dec. 14, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a reduction in the ethanol volume requirements for fuel blenders who are obligated under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS).

The support of Minnesota’s corn farmers is fueling a rise in popularity of E15, which is a blend of 15 percent homegrown ethanol and 85 percent gasoline approved for use in vehicles model year 2001 or newer.

In January and February of 2015 (that’s all we have data for so far), nearly 300,000 gallons of E15 were sold in Minnesota by retailers who received funding support from a broad coalition that included the Minnesota Corn Growers Association to install flex-fuel pump infrastructure.
