Reaction to EPA's 2017 RFS proposal

On Wednesday, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a proposed rule to set Renewable Volume Obligations (RVO) under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) for 2017. EPA proposed a total renewable fuel volume of 18.8 billion gallons, including 14.8 billion for corn ethanol.

The numbers are an increase from 2016 RVO levels, but still fall short of the numbers set by Congress in the RFS, which is legislation that sets annual targets for the amount of cleaner-burning biofuels like corn ethanol blended into our fuel supply.

Our View: The small engine industry needs to change with the times

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), which represents the small engine industry, just released their annual survey results concerning consumer knowledge of small engine fuel options. Based upon the results of the survey, corn farmers and small engine manufacturers can agree that consumers need and deserve more information about today’s fuel options. We know from our own consumer research that consumers are hungry for information about the positive effects of ethanol blended fuels.

Ethanol Update: The RFS, ethanol's economic impact, oil subsidies and more

It’s been a while since we’ve updated everyone on the happenings in the world of clean, renewable and homegrown ethanol. So, we’ll forgo the chit-chat and get right into the update.

Reform instead of repeal?
It looks like “Big Oil” is shifting it’s strategy from trying to repeal the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) to reforming it. However, part of those “reforms” include repealing the corn ethanol portion of the RFS.

USDA: Ethanol produces twice the amount of energy it consumes

The crowd that’s always trying to tear down ethanol constantly pushes the myth that ethanol requires more energy to make than it creates. The myth has been disproven time and again, but that’s never stopped the anti-ethanol zealots before.

Well, maybe a new USDA study finally slow them down.

The report is called “2015 Energy Balance For The Corn-Ethanol Industry” and concludes that ethanol has, on average a 2:1 energy ratio.

Supermileage -- Stewartville corn

Hosanna Biffert (left) and Amelia Welter turned heads at the 2015 Supermileage Challenge earlier this week with their E85 car painted like a corn cob. This was the first time Biffert and Welter have participated in Supermileage Challenge, held annually at Brainerd International Raceway and sponsored, in part, by the Minnesota Corn Growers Association.

“We liked the idea behind ethanol and corn,” Biffert said. “We wanted to show our support for corn,

E85 often gives drivers more bang for their buck than regular gasoline

If you fill up with E85 (a blend of 85 percent homegrown ethanol and 15 percent regular gasoline), you’re often getting more bang for your buck. Specifically, when the fuel is priced correctly by retailers, drivers who fill up with E85 get more Btu per dollar than regular unleaded (which only contains 10 percent ethanol).

First, what’s a Btu? A Btu (or British Thermal Unit) is a unit of energy traditionally used to measure power.

Minnesota Corn farmers proud of ethanol investments

The Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) has a long-standing tradition of supporting our state’s pioneering ethanol industry. That support continues today and is highlighted in a new 6-page publication that focuses on ethanol and co-product projects backed by Minnesota’s corn farmers.

Since 2008, Minnesota’s corn farmers have invested $18 million to build ethanol infrastructure, support groundbreaking biofuels research, and develop and improve co-products from the biofuels-making process.

“From the very beginning,
