SUMMARY:UMN Extension Nitrogen Smart 2024 - Oronoco
DESCRIPTION:https://extension.umn.edu/event/nitrogen-smart-2024-oronoco \nFocus on the fundamentals of nitrogen management then take it to the next level with an advanced course on manure management. \nNitrogen Smart Fundamentals\nThis course focuses on management strategies that maximize economic return on N investments while minimizing losses. \nTopics for the morning session include: \n\nSources of nitrogen (N) for crops.\nHow nitrogen is lost from soil and how you can reduce losses.\nHow to manage nitrogen in drainage systems.\nWhat the Nutrient Reduction Strategy and Nitrogen Fertilizer Management Plan mean for Minnesota producers.\nPractices to refine nitrogen management\, including split applications\, alternative N fertilizers\, soil and tissue testing and N models.\n\nManure management\nLivestock manures have been used as a crop fertilizer source for thousands of years. It continues to be a valuable source of crop nutrients\, even with the advent of synthetic fertilizers. Because its nutrient content and availability can vary widely\, it’s important to develop a management plan that will optimize crop productivity while protecting water quality. \nTopics for the afternoon session include: \n\nBenefits and challenges of using manure in crop production\nWhat determines nutrient content in manure\nHow manure storage and handling affect nutrient availability\nImportance of manure sampling and testing\nHow application methods and timing affect nitrogen loss\nPractices to optimize manure use and minimize nitrogen losses\n\n\nCost\nThere is no cost to attend Nitrogen Smart\, thanks to the generous support of Minnesota corn farmers and their checkoff dollars. \nRegistration\nPre-registration is not required. \nAccessibility\nUniversity of Minnesota Extension is committed to providing equal opportunity for participation in all programs\, services\, and activities. To request accommodations for persons with disabilities\, contact Brad Carlson two weeks before the start of the event. Requests received after this date will be honored whenever possible.
