The Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) applauds today’s announcement that the White House and Congress are moving forward with the necessary legislative steps to ratify the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

MCGA President Les Anderson released the following statement in response:

“The news that the White House and Congress are moving toward passing the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement is a very positive step for Minnesota’s corn growers. Mexico and Canada represent the largest export market for American corn farmers today, which is the result of open trade between our borders. We are pleased to hear USMCA will continue this momentum in the years ahead, as well as serve as a template for future trade negotiations.”

“Thank you to members of Congress and the Administration for prioritizing reaching an agreement, which brings us closer to ratification and much-needed certainty for corn farmers in Minnesota and beyond.”

USMCA will update the existing North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), continuing the market access that has greatly aided the growth of trade with both countries. Mexico and Canada set new records for purchases of grain from American suppliers during the 2018/2019 marketing year, according to the U.S. Grains Council.

Ratification of USMCA has been a top federal priority for MCGA. Grassroots engagement by MCGA membership and in-person Capitol Hill visits by MCGA directors over the last year have raised awareness of the importance of the agreement in Washington D.C.
