Webinar: COVID-19 and its impact on grain markets

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Al Kluis of Kluis Commodity Advisors hosted a webinar on Friday putting the current COVID-19 crisis into perspective for farmers anxiously watching the markets.

Presented by the Minnesota Corn Growers Association and Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council, the 50-minute webinar, which you can watch below, was an opportunity for farmers to hear from Kluis, who has been in the grain trading industry for 40 years.

Discussing the current crisis, which he calls the worst he has seen in his career, Kluis points to the interdependence we have seen between global and commodity markets. Drops in the Dow Jones and Crude Oil markets coincided with falling prices in grain, livestock and especially ethanol. For corn farmers, specifically, the collapse of the ethanol market has been met with falling prices on corn.

With the current situation put into context, Kluis discusses how it compares to prior crises, like the Carter Grain Embargo, September 11 and the financial crisis of 2008. Kluis Commodity Advisors’ Cory Bartland also joins to discuss trading options for farmers to consider during this time while avoiding major financial decisions.
