High school lesson helps students make an informed decision at the pump

The Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) worked with MEG Corp Fuel Consulting to create an ethanol lesson plan for Minnesota educators. Covering everything from ethanol’s journey beginning on the farm to the benefits of ethanol-blended fuels at the pump, the lesson plan is available to educators through MN Ag in the Classroom as part of the organization’s mission to increase ag literacy through K-12 education.

The ethanol lesson plan includes background on fuel use in the United States, and the important role ethanol plays in reducing the country’s dependence on oil while increasing use of a homegrown, cleaner-burning source of fuel. You can view the lesson here.

Kelly Marczak, project manager with MEG Corp, said the lesson was created in a way that would fit with multiple subject areas, including agriculture, science and auto tech. And with many classrooms utilizing a virtual format, it can also be a resource for teachers working remotely.

“Students will walk away with a better understanding of the role fuels play in our daily lives, and how agriculture is playing an important role in renewable and sustainable fuel production,” she said. “It will also help educate students about their choices at the pump as they begin driving and making fuel choices of their own.”

Farmers’ investment in the Minnesota corn check-off is fueling a comprehensive approach to promoting ethanol-blended fuels. From school education to a statewide advertising campaign, the mission in each effort is driving demand for higher blends of ethanol at the pump.
