An analysis of how grain and grain product exports directly and indirectly add to the economies of individual U.S. states has been updated.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Grains Council (USGC) released the updated “Value of Grain Exports” analysis with data from 2020. The previous version of its analysis used data from 2018.

Minnesota Corn supports USGC as part of our mission to develop international markets for corn and corn co-products, including ethanol.

USGC and the National Corn Growers Association funded the analysis, and the consulting firm ComplEat Analytics conducted it. The aim was to demonstrate the importance of grain and grain product exports to individual state economies.

“This study is a great tool for us to track the importance of grain in all forms to the economy and job creation in the U.S. and at a state-by-state level,” USGC Vice President Cary Sifferath said in a statement. “It allows those who are interested to see what the value of grain exports in all forms to their state is and why they need to be involved and invested in export market development of the global markets that create those economic contributions.”

In Minnesota, grain and grain product exports directly and indirectly contributed $3.1 billion to the economy and supported 13,032 jobs in 2020, according to the analysis. Corn exports alone contributed $1.7 billion to the state’s economy.
