The Minnesota Corn Growers Association’s public policy manager, Alex Trunnell, has joined the Policy Fellows Program at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs for the 2024-25 cohort. Founded nearly 35 years ago, the nine-month program is one of the country’s most respected public affairs leadership experiences for emerging and mid-career professionals.

Each year, approximately 35 leaders from government, business/industry, and nonprofit organizations from around the state are selected through a competitive application process. Fellows from across Minnesota come together as a cohort once a month and travel together to Washington, D.C., for a multi-day study trip.

The program is an initiative of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance and is led by faculty director Professor Larry Jacobs.

As MCGA’s public policy manager, Trunnell communicates to policymakers the perspectives and policy initiatives of Minnesota’s corn farmers and connects farmers with elected officials, giving them the opportunity to tell their story. Prior to Minnesota Corn, he worked at the Minnesota Senate and the Farm Service Agency.

Trunnell received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Minnesota State University-Mankato. He and his wife recently moved to Minneapolis. In his free time, he enjoys running, hiking in the mountains, and finding new coffee and breakfast spots.

Trunnell said he’s looking forward to further building his leadership skills, expanding his network, and learning about best practices for developing public policy as a member of the Policy Fellows Program.

“In my seven years in public policy, I’ve seen just how important effective leadership, communication, and listening skills are in crafting policies that positively impact corn farmers, rural communities, and all Minnesotans,” Trunnell said. “I’m honored by the opportunity to join this prestigious program and look forward to using what I learn on behalf of Minnesota’s family corn farmers.”
