Evaluating the value of a microbial (N) in corn production (Year 2)

Les Anderson

Given the attention to the use of N in corn production, N in our groundwater, and the economics of reducing fertilizer inputs, I would like to try and determine the amount of N produced with Pivot Bio Proven, a Microbial applied with the starter in-furrow, in corn prduction. I believe that products like these have potential. Southeast MN has many challenges when it comes to N. Leaching is a major concern, and our topography does not lend itself well to late season N application. I used the product in 2019 and 2020, with results in the 5 to 15 bushels per acre range, and would like to further determine the
amount of benefit, and how much we might be able to reduce synthetic N and achieve the same Yield. I will plant the field with alternating strips of 80 feet. Treatments:  1) a regular rate of N -170 lb/ac; 2) regular rate of N + Pivot Bio Proven; 3) 150 lb/ac rate of N + Pivot Bio Proven, and 4) 130 lb/ac rate of N + Pivot Bio Proven.
