Agronomy Field Tour

June 21, 2022 @ 8:00 am - 12:30 pm

Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. The program will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the SROC Administration Building with Ed Usset speaking on Commodity Outlook. The program will then move outside to the field on tour wagons. The field tour will conclude at approximately 11:30 a.m. with lunch and time for Q & A. The tour will be held rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, this program will be held in the SROC Administration Building.

TOPICS & SPEAKERS

Commodity Outlook – Ed Usset, UM Dept. of Applied Economics
Ed is a grain marketing specialist for the Center for Farm Financial Management. He provides training programs designed to improve the marketing sills of crop producers. Ed will share his thoughts on the current situation with corn and soybean prices.

Weed Management – Ryan Miller, UM Regional Extension Educator
Ryan will discuss results from weed management research conducted across the state by U of MN researchers. The focus will be on early season weed control and how to control escaped weeds.

Corn Growth and Development – Jeff Coulter, UM Extension Agronomist
The 2022 planting season has been challenging for many corn producers. Jeff will look at the current stage of corn development in Minnesota with the goal of assessing yield potential.

Cover Crops – Ethan Ley, Graduate Student, Dept. of Agronomy and Plant Genetics
Ethan’s graduate thesis research examines how implementing a cover crop into corn and soybeans effect weed management in both crops. He will summarize results of this research.

Quantifying the Benefits of Soil Health – Bailey Tangen, Graduate Research Assistant, Dept. of Soil, Water and Climate
Bailey is conducting research to put an economic value to strategies performed on farm that have potential to improve soil health.

Side-Dressing Liquid Manure into Corn – Melissa Wilson, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Soil, Water and Climate
Dr. Wilson will discuss results of research that involves applying liquid manure in-season to corn at early growth stages.

The Agronomy Field Tour will provide research-based information for crop producers, crop consultants, agribusiness staff, farm managers, Extension educators, government agency personnel and anyone involved in agricultural crop production.
